Whether your skill level is beginner or intermediate, the Kahuna Wake School team will provide a safe, fun, and educational environment in which to learn. It will be an unforgettable experience for the entire family.

Wakesurfing

Many people have claimed to have invented wakesurfng. Some claims go back as far as the 1920’s where it was called boat-surfing. Print media and film footage from the 1950’s and 1960’s show traditional surfers riding behind power boats. From that period the pastime continued to evolve as multiple companies began building surf board specific to wakesurfing.

Over the last 10 years boat and board technology has improved rapidly. Nautique has radically improved the ability to make and control a wake suitable to allow surfing on virtually any body of water.

Like wakeboarding the rider uses a shorter rope to get out of the water. Once out of the water, the rider, while standing on a board, rides a wave created by water being displaced under the hull of the boat and shaped by special fins. Compared to wakeboarding, wakesurfing is at much lower speeds, typically 10 kph.

Wakeboarding

Thought to be created in the 1980’s, Wakeboarding has its origins in both water skiing, surfing and snowboarding. The rider, fastened to a board, is towed behind a boat at speeds similar to water skiing.

First invented in Australia by Jeff Darby, and originally know as skurfing, the rider used a binding less, hand shaped board designed specifically for towing. Along with the development of bindings, the name skurfing died off and was replaced with Wakeboarding. Over the years the wakeboarding family has expanded to include kneeboarding and wakeskating.  While Jeff was developing skurfing in Australia, a surfer named Howard Jacobs was on a similar path in Florida. Howard’s idea was to surf smaller boards behind boats, adding foot straps to the board to allow for tricks.

Over the years, Wakeboarding has continued to gain popularity, ultimately being added as a competitive sport in the X Games.

Lessons and Pricing

Lesson Overview

Upon arrival, Kahuna Wake School instructors will introduce themselves and get an understanding of the skill level possessed by each participant. Once introductions are complete, focus will be turned to safety. A detailed review safety procedures and protocols will be completed

Dry land instruction precedes entering the water. During this time, our instructors will demonstrate and instruct on how to put on the equipment, techniques for getting on top of the water for the first time as well as the fundamentals required to get up and riding.

Although you may be participating in a group, once in the water all instruction and boat operation becomes focused on the individual to ensure they get the most out the experience.
